I dare say the Japanese understood metallurgy a bit better than their European counterparts as the (outer) carbon steel for Katanas was vastly more superior. Also most of the medevil swords were designed to stab &amp; hack. This resulted in a long heavy sword as slicing does nothing against chain mail &amp; the medevil Europeans were not to keen in the martial arts.</description>
